7 tonne tank removal!

– written by Dr Kirsti Abbott

High on an internal mezzanine of the Boilerhouse, there sat a 7 tonne tank that held hot water at very high pressures. On Thursday the 28th of March 2019, that tank was removed by a 100 tonne crane.

The removal of this tank marks the last major removal from the Boilerhouse proper, the two boilers from Stage 2 (the rectangular northern section) having been dismantled and disposed of recently.

Remediation of the Boilerhouse is on track to be completed by mid-April, and cleaned completely about 4 weeks afterward.

UNE staff and visitors can look forward to a spectacularly lit steel and concrete structure on the hill at night, and an environment clear of contamination.
