To celebrate the recent NSW Government announcement awarding the UNE Boilerhouse redevelopment project $6.128 million as part of the NSW Government Regional Growth, Environment and Tourism Fund, UNE hosted a steampunk-themed “Night at the Boilerhouse” for the over-18 public on Friday 8th November. ...

It is with enormous excitement that UNE welcome Architectus and James Cubitt Architects on board the Boilerhouse bandwagon as lead of a fantastic Principle Design team to create our iconic Boilerhouse building and discovery space. James Cubitt Architects were originally charged with preparing concept reports; their architects eyeing off the structure for years as they worked on other UNE projects. I can only imagine the delight of being able to focus on a mission such as this for designers who think big, bold and boiling. ...
Drivers on the UNE Ring Road may have noticed that the walls of the Boilerhouse are tumbling down!...
From the outside, four years seems like a long time to get to the point of hiring a designer for the Boilerhouse Discovery Space. But the truth is, UNE is on a well-paced trajectory for opening a world-class $15 million play destination in regional Australia within 8 years of inception. It has been a wild ride to where we stand now, with wind beneath our hopes and dreams sometimes still, sometimes gusting, and always full of energy. And now, as we enter design phase at a time when the world is re-imagining how life will look forever, we are perched, ready to fly and likely thrash about with all the crazy ideas we’ll need to see our future with fresh eyes. ...

The Boilerhouse project is a redevelopment of the historic, award-winning boilerhouse building on UNE’s Armidale campus into The Boilerhouse Discovery Space. It will become an iconic destination in regional NSW for locals and visitors, offering play-based experiences, both indoor and outdoor, for children aged 0 – 12 and their families....
I was privileged to travel recently to the United States to attend Interactivity, the annual International Children’s Museum conference, this year called “Open Source Play: Sharing the Creative Code”. And not to waste a minute in such a rich learning environment, in a country where museums, galleries, playscapes and culture intertwine to create inspirational moments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, I took the opportunity to immerse myself in these places in New York and St Louis, Missouri....
